On World Food Day, we celebrate our right to food and reflect on ways to secure a better future for everyone. This year’s World Food Day theme, “Right to Food for a Better Life and Better Future,” could not be more relevant. Yet, in Sri Lanka, despite the abundant resources available to us, we face an alarming issue: food waste.
Did you know that Sri Lanka wastes an astonishing 3,963 tonnes of food every single day? To put it into perspective, this is more than 13 times the weight of the Galle Lighthouse! While many in our country struggle to put food on their tables, this wasted food could feed countless families. It’s time we, as a community, take a stand.
The Weight of the Problem: Why Food Waste Matters
Food waste is not just about discarding food; it’s about wasting the resources that went into producing, transporting, and preparing it. From the water used to grow crops, the energy spent packaging and delivering food, to the time and effort of farmers and workers—every bit of wasted food reflects a wasted opportunity to make a difference.
Moreover, food waste contributes to environmental degradation, by generating methane in landfills, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. So, food waste is not just an economic or ethical issue; it’s an environmental one too.
At Knorr, we are committed to reducing food waste and raising awareness about the importance of this global challenge. Keep reading to find out how you can make a difference.
Tips to Reduce Food Waste in Your Home
Reducing food waste starts in our own kitchens. Here are some simple tips and tricks from our expert Knorr Chefs to help you play your part in creating a better future:
- Plan your meals: Make a meal plan for the week and stick to your shopping list.
- Use every part of your ingredients: Did you know that many food scraps, like vegetable peels, stems, and leftover bones, can be turned into flavorful broths or stocks? Instead of tossing them, give them new life in your cooking!
- Store food properly: Improper storage is one of the leading causes of food spoilage. Store your fruits and vegetables in the right places, and use airtight containers to extend their freshness.
- Get creative with leftovers: Leftovers don’t have to be boring! At Knorr, we believe in getting creative. Click here for easy and delicious recipes you can try today: https://rasai.lk/
- Donate excess food: Consider donating surplus food to a local shelter, food bank or even your neighbours/friends. A small gesture can go a long way in helping those in need.
- Practice FIFO: Use the “First In, First Out” method to ensure older items are used before newer ones.
- Track your waste: Keep a log of what you throw away to identify patterns and adjust your shopping habits.
